Meet Marla Striar! | Rye & Rye Brook Moms

This month’s Meet a Mom is Marla Striar! Growing up in Westchester and deciding to raise a family here, Marla has a wealth of knowledge of all the ins and outs of the county! Read to learn a bit about her and if you need any advice, give her a call!

Where are you from originally and how long have you lived in town? I grew up in Edgemont and we’ve lived here in Rye Brook for almost 8 years. We moved here right before our younger daughter was born.  I have lived in Westchester most of my life and I love talking to people about all the reasons why it’s a terrific place to live.
Child(ren) and Age(s)?  I have 2 daughters – Dylan ( 11) and Hayley (7)
One thing people would be surprised to know about youOnce upon a time, I was very afraid of heights and elevators. Thankfully, I overcame both those fears because neither are very helpful when working in real estate.
Anyone special you’d like to thank for helping you through parenthood? The friends I’ve met here since each of the girls were little are truly my “parenting heroes”- friends with children who were older and shared their own experiences with me and their “ how-to’s”, and friends with children the exact same age as mine who were right there “ in the trenches” with me. It really does take a village… and I am very lucky to live in the same town as relatives with older children, so I certainly learned the Rye Brook ropes from them.
Favorite things to do with your kids? I love taking our girls places where they can have new experiences. We love to travel with them, take them to all kinds of different restaurants to encourage them to try new foods, and show them how people live in other places. I love history, as a matter of fact, I was a history teacher before our girls were born, so we do go to a lot of historic spots together.
Are you involved in a business venture, a local organization, a creative endeavor, or in the corporate world? Please share! I’m a real estate agent with Compass and I’m so excited to be working out of our brand new office in Rye Ridge Plaza.  I believe we are the only real estate company with an office in Rye Brook!
How has this community been instrumental in getting you to where you are now? When we started looking to buy a home, I knew we wanted to live in Rye Brook, but it took a lot of looking and learning to find what was right for us. Before the girls were born, I was a teacher, so I knew the size and scope I wanted in a school district. What I didn’t know was …a lot, actually. I honestly wasn’t sure if we wanted a fixer-upper, or new/ young construction. I wasn’t sure what style of house we wanted- and each style comes with perks and challenges depending on your lifestyle and your needs.
I had a lot to learn about the different neighborhoods, price points, permits and policies to do work, bus service in proximity to school- so many things to know! So, our own personal house-hunting was definitely a real education for me! When a friend encouraged me to join the firm she worked for, I was able to bring everything I knew as a lifelong resident of Westchester, and all that I’d gleaned as a recent homebuyer, to my clients.
As an agent with Compass, I share my hyper-local knowledge about Westchester with my clients, and utilize unique, cutting edge technology to help make the home buying and/or selling process so much easier. Compass even has a program called Compass Concierge that allows sellers to make home improvements prior to listing so their house can really show at its best and sell faster!
