This week’s Meet a Mom feature is with Jenn Rubeo, owner of Tan Lines Esthetics. Jenn is an esthetician and spray tan specialist who brings a custom, natural-looking glow directly to clients through her mobile spray tanning service. Jenn is passionate about helping people feel confident and comfortable in their own skin, whether they’re preparing for a big event, a vacation, or simply want an everyday boost. We spoke with Jenn about her background in esthetics, what inspired her to start Tan Lines, and what it’s like running a mobile beauty business while raising a family in Westchester.

Tell us a little about yourself and your family. Where are you from originally and where do you live now?

I’m originally from just outside Boston, Massachusetts, and moved to Harrison in 2020. I live here with my husband, our two kids, and our dog Storm, and have loved becoming part of the Westchester community.

Can you share a bit about your training and background in esthetics?

I’ve always loved beauty—skincare especially. In 2016, I attended the Elizabeth Grady School of Esthetics in Massachusetts to earn my esthetics license, where I was first introduced to spray tanning and immediately fell in love with it. I later continued my education with additional spray tan certifications and spent time working as a lead esthetician at a beauty bar and in a spray tan salon, refining the custom technique I bring to clients today.

What inspired you to start Tan Lines?

I always knew I wanted to run my own beauty business. When I moved here, I noticed many people were either UV tanning or relying on at-home self tanners, which can be messy, streaky, and often turn orange.

I wanted to create a better option—something that helped people feel confident for the moments that matter most, whether that’s a wedding, vacation, event, or just everyday life. As an esthetician, I knew there was a better way: a clean, comfortable, customized spray tan that looks natural and effortless.

That idea became Tan Lines Esthetics, a mobile spray tan service that brings the experience directly to clients in their own space.

What does an in-home spray tan appointment with you typically look like?

 Easy. Quick. Completely stress-free.

Your appointment takes about 20 minutes from setup to breakdown. I bring a pop-up spray tent and floor covering, so your space stays clean. All I need is a well-lit area and an outlet (kitchen, bathroom, bedroom, or even a garage works perfectly).

I’ll guide you through a few simple positions while I apply your custom, natural-looking tan. After a quick dry down, I’ll wipe your palms and nails and lightly blend your hands so everything looks seamless.

Then you’ll slip into dark, loose clothing, let your tan develop, and rinse when it’s ready.

What are the most common questions or concerns you hear from first-time spray tan clients?

The number one question/ concern is “Will I turn orange?” Orange tones come from low-quality solutions or using the wrong level for someone’s skin tone. I only use high-quality professional spray tan solutions, and every tan is custom color matched to the client’s skin tone and goals. The right formula and proper application make all the difference. My goal is always a result that looks natural, even, and like your skin—just a more sun-kissed version.

How far in advance do you recommend scheduling a tan before an event or vacation?

For most events, I recommend scheduling your spray tan about two days beforehand. This gives the tan time to fully develop and settle into its most natural color.

For vacations, the sweet spot is the day before you leave—that way you arrive already glowing.

Brides and bridal parties should plan for a trial tan ahead of time (before a dress fitting or bachelorette weekend is perfect), and then schedule the wedding tan about two days before the big day.

One important tip: make sure to have any other beauty appointments—waxing, facials, nails, hair—done at least 24 hours before your spray tan for the best results.

What advice would you give to someone considering their first spray? Any tips for prepping for it and helping the tan to last?

The most important step is exfoliation. Spray tan solution develops on the top layer of your skin, so removing dead skin beforehand helps create an even, natural result.

About 24–48 hours before your appointment, exfoliate with a dry brush or exfoliating mitt, then follow with a hydrating lotion.

After your tan, keep your skin moisturized. Since spray tans fade with your skin’s natural exfoliation process, hydration helps your tan last longer and fade more evenly.

What do you enjoy most about running a mobile business that comes to clients’ homes?

What I love most about running a mobile business is the connection you build with clients. Appointments often feel like catching up with a friend while helping someone feel confident and comfortable in their own skin before an event, vacation, or even just in their everyday life.

Life is busy—between work, kids, and everything else, self-care is often the first thing to get pushed aside. Being a mobile beauty service allows me to bring that little moment of self-care directly to my clients, making it easy to fit into their day.

What advice do you have for a mom thinking about starting her own business?

Starting a business can be challenging and there are definitely long days, but it’s also one of the most rewarding things you can do. As a mom, it’s meaningful to build something that’s your own while showing your kids what it looks like to work hard, take risks, and follow something you’re passionate about.

We love to support local businesses here in Westchester! What are your favorite local spots?

We’re big on supporting small businesses in our family—especially local restaurants. For date nights, Alessia’s is always our go-to. Their chicken parm penne alla vodka is unreal.

For everyday favorites, we love TNT Luncheonette and Harrison Bagels for a weekend breakfast. And when we’re grabbing something easy as a family, Don Chuy’s, Dimitri’s Gyro Grill, and New China 3 are always in the mix.

We’re incredibly grateful for our amazing community and the wonderful people and places that make it so special. Explore our Blog page for features that spotlight local businesses and more.
