Meet a Mom: Jill Maitland | Rye & Rye Brook Moms

Where are you from originally and how long have you lived in town?

I grew up in Queens and went to Stuyvesant High School in Manhattan, so I identify as a NYC girl. When we got married we moved into the Lifesaver factory and then moved to Rye Brook in 1999.

Child(ren) and Age(s)?

Rheanna, age 25 is in medical school and Joelle, who is almost 21, is a senior in college

One thing people would be surprised to know about you…

I’ve been following a vegan diet since 2011. Unless you’ve shared a meal with me, you may not know this. I’m passionate about healthy living based on the foods we consume.

Anyone special you’d like to thank for helping you through parenthood?

My mom. Since I work outside the home, she took care of the girls when I went back to work after maternity leave. She has the wisdom and perspective to understand what really matters – don’t sweat the small stuff, teach children self-sufficiency starting from a young age, demonstrate and instill in them how to smile and be polite to everyone they meet.

What Are Your Parenting Goals?

To make sure my girls follow their passions and have the tools they need to be happy and successful.

Favorite things to do with your kids?

Travel! We’ve taken family trips to the Caribbean, Hawaii, Mexico, and Europe. They are memories we re-visit again and again

Are you involved in a business venture, a local organization, a creative endeavor, or in the corporate world? Please share!

I’ve always worked outside the home, mostly for financial institutions. I’ve worked at Citibank for the past 8 years. I recently joined the Carver Center Board of Directors. This is an amazing organization, led by a dynamic and impassioned group of people and I’m thrilled and honored to take on this responsibility.

How has this community been instrumental in getting you to where you are now?

I’ve met some of my closest and dearest friends in Rye Brook. I wouldn’t be the same without them.

Favorite things to do in town?

Anything in Crawford Park: I used to work with Friends of Crawford Park, and we organized a 5K race for several years as a fundraiser. The “Music at the Mansion” series is a current favorite.

What is your favorite restaurant town?

There are so many! We enjoy Villa Rustica, Bar Taco and Sonora

Best advice you have gotten?

As hard as it is to live in the moment while raising children, cherish the times as much as possible because the days are long, but the years are short.
