Tips, Tricks and things to Do With Your 4-legged Kids This Summer - Rye & Rye Brook Moms

Don’t forget to include your pup in your summer plans! Tips, tricks and things to do with your 4 legged kids this summer!

There are lots of dog friendly parks right in our area, perfect for a day trip! With plenty of activities at these parks to keep you, your kids, and your pet’s occupied and stimulated, the hardest part will be choosing where to go. Here are a few of our favorite places at Active Dog:

Lake Mohegan! Right in Fairfield CT, is a gem of a spot. With 170 areas including hiking trails, a picnic area, swimming spots and a splash pad, there is so much to see and do! Dogs with excellent recall can even be off leash in designated areas.

Timberlands! Located in Guilford CT, this peaceful park is open from dawn to dusk. The perfect spot for dogs who are a little more timid around lots of noise and people. The trails are more level with a few tougher spots. There is lake and stream access for the pups to cool themselves off!

Sunny Brook State Park! Heading over to Torrington CT this 464 acre state park is a great spot for hiking and fishing. The pond is a great spot to let your dog take a dip!

Now that you know where to go, making sure your pup is prepared for the heat is the next step!

Choosing the right time to walk or hike is pivotal to your dog’s safety. Early morning and later in the evening is the best time. Midday heat affects us all, especially those wearing fur coats! If it’s too hot for you, it’s too hot for them as well.

Before settling down for a picnic spot, scope out where the shade is and a level spot for their water bowl to rest. Adding a few ice cubes with a  snack in the middle is also a great treat for them! You can also soak some kibble in water and freeze it into a Kong for a tasty snack!

The summer months bring loads of fun, trips and experiences for us all. It also unfortunately brings the bugs! Making sure your dog is up to date on all of the flea and tick medication is key. Applying bug spray to you and your kids as well is very important. With all of these new hiking trails to explore, you want to make sure everyone is protected!

We’ll see you out on the trails!
