The Sharing Shelf’s 2017 “Backpacks to School” campaign is officially underway. Our goal is to fill 1,100 backpacks for children from pre-kindergarten through high school living in Westchester County. While we live in one of our nation’s wealthiest counties, three of every 10 children in Westchester live in low-income homes while one in three children qualify for free or reduced lunch. For these children and their families, finding the resources to purchase new school supplies is an added strain as they struggle to make ends meet. The Sharing Shelf of FSW strives to ease this burden by providing students with backpacks filled with the supplies they’ll need to start the school year.
Since our first distribution of 200 backpacks in 2011, we have seen increasing need and demand for this program.  In 2014, The Sharing Shelf provided nearly 800 backpacks to children in 20 school districts while in 2016, we helped more than 1,100 local children from over 30 school districts. The steady rise in demand indicates that there is an unmet need in our community.
We need your help to purchase backpacks and supplies. These items will be given to individual children who attend schools county-wide. Each child will receive a backpack containing the items listed below depending on their grade level.
When you click below, you are purchasing a complete backpack that includes all of the items listed. We hope you will help. Please consider buying a backpack in honor of each of your children, a family member or in lieu of a gift.
Thank you for your support.
